Self Concept Through Interpersonal Communication Essay

I chose the topic of self-concept through interpersonal communication because I had an interest in it. This interest is because I didn’t understand that one’s self-concept affected the way one is perceived by others. I learned self-concept through class discussions, but I wanted a better understanding of how communication affects one’s self-concept and how it affects one’s perception Ones self-concept affects ones perception, attitude and behavior, which can be demonstrated during the process of interpersonal communication. Aspects of ones life influence their self-concept, which not only affect how people perceive them but how they perceive themselves. Such things are gender, motivational level and psychological type. Poor communication can cause one to have a poor perception of oneself. Ones emotional state, dislikes, likes values and body image are affected by the opinions of others and can render one to have an inferior and insecure self-concept. How one communicates is also influenced by gender. Studies show that ones sex can place a person in a gender role expectation. Women and Men communicate differently and because sexual identity is defined through same sex parent or role model, women and men can get into gender role expectations. These expectations influence their perception attitudes and behavior that will result in a communication style. This early self-concept can effect each ones interpersonal relations. Women for instance are much-attached human beings they have very early identification with their mothers, and this can cause an on going pattern of role expectation. It can lead to interpersonal communication skills that are very nurturing and understanding. Women are not threatened by intimacy and communicating at a close range with people. Similarly, men also have an early identification process not with their mother, but their fathers. Men tend to be fairly reserved, and quite. Quality Management is a process comprising of few factors, which takes care of the quality in every domain (Zink 2012). It also contains the seven quality management tools that ensure quality business in organizations. It also brief about all the stakeholders of those organizations that are globalizing. It comprises of the critical analysis of the influence that the globalization has constructed at the work place in the organizations. Globalization at the work place: The process, through which the expansion of the business market reaches to the international market, is globalization (Beck 2015). Globalization comes into effect after a continuous quality management at the work place. Quality Management at work place: Quality management helps in creating a good work place. A good work place is not about an impressive performance only (Hitt, Ireland and Hoskisson 2012). On contrary to this, it is more than just an impressive performance. Quality management tools influences the dimensions of organizations in becoming a good work place (Coker 2014). A quality flaws might not catch the attention of the higher management, things might remain unrectified (Cummings and Worley 2014). Moreover, it grows with every passage of day resulting in more wrong practices in the organization. Quality Management determines a perfect direction for an organization to head for (Lasserre 2012). This is not just about the higher management team but all the stakeholders of the organizations are more or less responsible. A bad work place is always helpful in finding clues about a good work place (Zink 2012). In a bad work place, often employees complaint about the management issues related to unfairness in wages, poor physi cal environment, unclear responsibilities, no feedbacks etc (Johnson 2014). It is like an uncertain place where uncertainties are common. Managers in such work place often tell the employees about unclear objectives, which is subject to change without any prior intimation. Moreover, quality of work, hostile unions is the two most important factors of a bad workplace (Dunning 2014). On contrary to this, a good work place possesses the characteristics such as clear objectives of all the managerial staffs and the stakeholders, lesser union effects etc. A high quality management creates a transparent atmosphere in and within the organization, which benefits not only the higher management but also the all stakeholders (Steven, Dong and Corsi 2014). A high quality management provides longevity to the organization with the sustenance of good performance (Steven, Dong and Corsi 2014). The anxiety among the employees, their poor health conditions are all growing because of inability to cope with the unfavoured conditions such as increased work pressure (Dunning 2014). A quality management do take care of the pressures on the employees by adding some alternative help. It gives a realization of the need of stakeholders and thereby helps in negotiating any negative impacts that an unexpected fact can cause. Quality management tools: Quality management tools are a bunch of techniques that helps in improving the quality of operations (Zink 2012). Quality management tools allow the tracking of the teams performance by doing some technical work. This comprises of Cause-and-effect diagram, Control chart, Check sheet, Histogram, Scatter diagram, Pareto chart and Stratification (Zink 2012). These tools enable the management to have a check on the effect of globalization and control on the team to some extent (Brire, Chapelle and Szafarz 2012). These tools help to have control on the effects of globalization. These tools provide a grab on the topic and allow its proper analysis technically (Zink 2012). Influence of globalization on quality management: Globalization has highly influenced the quality of the management in irrespective of the organizations (Coker 2014). Small organizations are finding it difficult to cope with the changed business scenarios. Globalization brings cultural diversity into the organizations and those small organizations are finding it difficult to cope with the requirements (Coker 2014). On contrary to this, big organizations those have flexibility to adjust their system with the changed phase of the business, the cultural diversity is benefitting those (Coker 2014). It is increasing the credibility in such organizations as the cultural diversity brings with it a bunch of distinct talents together (Lasserre 2012). Globalization has also influenced the earnings of the organizations (Johnson 2014). Big organizations can now introduce their services to other parts of world by means of outsourcing the service through third party in the concerned country. It brings more exposure of organizations to the customers by reaching to other countries. However, outsourcing also affect adversely on organizations as these outsources are independent and bear minimum control of their service provider (Zink 2012). An increased diversity in cultural due to globalization has opened up ample of training options inside the organizations (Steven, Dong and Corsi 2014). Cultural diversity is helpful in bringing a positive change in the organization as it opens up its hand to all from every corner (Steven, Dong and Corsi 2014). However, the cultural diversity enhances the necessity of conducting numerous training classes in organizations to create harmony and better understanding among diverse employees (Cummings and Worley 2014). Globalization helps in enhancing the standards of the service as the third party those who outsource the service are from foreign orientation (Johnson 2014). Foreign employees used to work in comparatively healthier environment. Moreover, to attract those foreign employees to enhance the business by raising the standard is of utmost requirement (Lasserre 2012). On contrary to this, smaller companies are hardly subject to such a drastic makeover, as it does not have sufficient financial backups to cope with the changed requirement. Roles of different stakeholders of organizations: Different stakeholders have different changed roles with the effect of globalization at the work place. Customers are an integral part of any organization and depend indirectly on organizations for their services and products (Cummings and Worley 2014). Globalization brings about new customers in addition to the existing customer base, as it is aiming on its expansion to the foreign part of the world (Beck 2015). Globalization benefits customers as it brings ample of choices to them with the exploration of new products (Beck 2015). Local market response helps organizations analysing the potentiality of their products and services and this motivates them for a foreign exposure (Beck 2015). On contrary to this, this step can also act as one of the causes that harm the local customer base. Moreover, Organizations might overlook their existing local customers to save any extra expenditure that can incur to meet with the separate requirements (Coker 2014). Globalization brings loads of responsibilities on the shoulders of the management (Beck 2015). The increased dimension of the business asks for more deployment of bench strength and thereby asking for a higher financial support (Johnson 2014). On a contrary to this, maintaining the quality in the management becomes challenging as the globalization has allowed the inclusion of foreign employees. Brutus vs. Antony Essay Brutus and Antony both produce different tactics to sway the peoplesopinions about Caesar. Both men present different points about Casaer and hisrule in Rome. Brutus basis for his speech is presenting an explanation of whyhe planned and participated in Caesars execution. Antony uses a tactic ofbrainwashing by telling the crowd that he is there to bury Casaer not to praisehim. Both men are successful, yet Antony holds the upper hand by speaking afterCasaer. Brutus opens his speech asking the people believe his honor and respect it. He tells the crowd he loved Caesar as much as any of his listeners. His ultimateexplanation, which seems very good is, Not that I loved Caesar less, But thatI loved Rome more. He appeals to the crowd by asking them if they all wish tobe bondmen or noble Romans. He pauses for a response and the people say thereare none that wish to be slaves. Brutus appeals to the peoples lives and howthey wish to live them. He tells the crowd that he helped to kill Caesar for thepeople and their well being. He is actually giving a noble speech and it seemswell put together. Antony opens his speech by saying, I am here to bury Caesar, not topraise him. He brainwashes the crowd with this line by getting them to thinkhe does not care about Caesars death. For he is on Brutus side now. TheBasis of his speech is on the Ambition of Casaer. He appeals that he had verylittle ambition. He says that Caesar brought home many captives for money and heasks if this is ambition. He follows this by saying, But Brutus says he wasambitious, and Brutus is an honorable man. He repeats this phrase four timesthroughout his speech. This puts emphasis in the peoples belief that Antonyis on Brutus side. Then Antony asks the people if they, all did love himonce, why do they not mourn for him now. Making them question themselvesabout their faith. He then tells them his heart is in the coffin with Caesar andhe must pause. This shows the crowd he loves Caesar and truly misses him. Whenhe returns to speaking he talks of how he should do Caesar and Cassius wrong. Hesays he will not be cause they are honorable men. By repeating this throughoutthe speech he puts the impression in the peoples minds that Brutus and Cassiushave brainwashed Antony and maybe they really are not honorable men. Finally heputs the crowd into the palm of his hand by telling them Caesar has a will forthem that includes money. This is what captures them to Antonys side. Thecrowd then wants to find Brutus and his followers and kill them. Brutus gives the crowd a straightforward explanation, of why they killedCaesar. He tries to show them that it is in their own interest and they shouldbe thankful. For they are not slaves. Antony plays of Brutus speech whenBrutus states that Caesar had ambition. He brainwashes the crowd in the end ofhis speech by showing sorrow and ultimately pausing because he says his heart isin the coffin with Caesar. Table of Contents Background  [1]   The LEGO Group is a family owned toy manufacturing company founded by a Danish carpenter-turned-toymaker Ole Kirk Kristiansen during the great depression in 1932. The company manufactured wooden toys because of the declining demand for building houses and furniture. In 1934 Ole combined the Danish words leg godt meaning play well to form LEGO. Ole founded LEGO with the motto Only the best is good enough (he produced toys using high quality materials and workmanship) which is still used by the LEGO Group as a guiding principle. In 1947, after World War II, LEGO acquired a plastic mould injection machine, which allowed LEGO to expand its business operations to produce a relatively large volume of plastic and wooden toys, resulting in the production of the first LEGO bricks. In 1954, Godtfred Kirk Kristiansen (one of Oles sons), found an opportunity to create toy products that were able to connect with products in the toy manufacturing industry, resulting in the birth of LEGO play-sets. In 1958, LEGO patented the improved LEGO brick design, also the year when Godtfred took over the company due to the death of his father. Between the 1960s and 2000s LEGO continuously grew into one of the worlds top largest toy manufactures, by expanding; with international sales, new innovative play-sets, sports and media licence acquisitions (i.e. franchise films, basketball, hockey, soccer), LEGO magazine subscriptions, erecting a LEGOLAND theme-park, launching a LEGO website, and LEGO videogames. However, in the early 2000s, the company experienced a decline in sales and profit: in 2003 revenues dropped 30% and continued another 10% in 2004. To overcome this crisis LEGO underwent a governance change to resolve the problems in the pre-existing management. In 2004, Jà ¸rgen Vig Knudstrop (the director of strategic development) replaced the CEO at the time, and in his first action as CEO he arranged a team to analyse the companys supply chain operations, from product development to production and distribution. The team discovered that although the newer products represented a large portion of annual revenues, newer generation play-sets were more elaborately designed and generated less profit; product designers were creating products without total consideration for material and production costs; designers used their own vendors resulting in LEGO having to deal with over 11,000 suppliers; inefficiencies in the organisation of the plastic mould injection machines, since each machine was capable of producing every type of LEGO brick retooling was required, causing downtimes resulting production facilities operating at 70% capacity. To bring the company back on track the team: reduced their product line where necessary as well as reduce the selection of colours for designs by half; used production costs of each brick to reduce expensive products, in-turn reducing the amount of suppliers needed by 80%; designers were shown the impact of using existing bricks over creating new ones for future designs; certain plastic mould injection machines were assigned specific LEGO bricks on scheduled cycles to reduce downtimes and retooling costs. These changes to product development, production and distribution implemented by Knudstrops leadership resulted in the LEGO Group earning a profit of $72 million in 2005, with profits increasing by 240% in 2006. Introduction  [2]   The LEGO Group is a privately held company based in Denmark. The company is currently owned by the 3rd and 4th generations of the Kirk Kristiansen founding family: Kjeld Kirk Kristiansen (Oles grandson) and his three children. Ownership of the company is handled through KIRKBI (an investment company) and the LEGO Foundation: KIRKBI owns 75% while the remaining 25% is held by the LEGO Foundation. As of 2012, the LEGO Group manufactures toys in more than 130 countries, has approximately 10,000 employees and is the third largest manufacturer of toys in the world (in terms of sales) after Mattel and Hasbro. Governance  [3]   The LEGO Groups approach to governance is focused on combining the strengths and benefits of private ownership with the applicable elements from good corporate governance for listed companies (Jensen, 2012). The certain requirements from listed companies (from the Danish Stock Exchange) are not all compatible for a family-owned company (Kjeld Kirk Kristiansen is majority shareholder) while recommendations of corporate governance structure and board composition still apply. The LEGO Group maintains the importance of having a strong and competent board of directors, especially because of family-ownership. To support this, the company elects a chairman among independent board members to ensure professional board management. This process is regulated via: ensuring a diverse and complementary board composition; regular board self-assessments; competitive compensation; and clear specific rules mandated for each management body. Being a family owned company, the LEGO Group is exposed to risk through the handover of ownership across generations. The mediation strategy is to highly involve the next generation in company matters pertaining to ownership. Organisational Structure The LEGO Group uses a hierarchical top-down structure with five separate departments (see Appendix A, pp. 8), this structure centralises the companys management to a functional management structure which rests the authority with corporate management the corporate management consists of the CEO, the CFO and four Executive Vice Presidents (The LEGO Group, 2010, pp. 7). The centralised functional management structure ensures consistency in organisations, as a limited number of persons are in charge causing jobs to be simplified allowing employees to be highly specialised in their work since specialisation leads to operational efficiencies where employees become specialists within their own realm of expertise (BusinessMate, 2010). This form of governance however, can result in slow decision-making processes as decisions must pass through bureaucracy in order to get through to corporate management (Riley, 2012). A disadvantage of functional management structures is that it facilitates rigid communication between employees and corporate management: employees can feel unheard and excluded from decisions that directly affect them. This lack of involvement can be detrimental to the job satisfaction, motivation and productivity of the employees (Jones and George, 2006, pp. 53-54). Leadership The current CEO (Knudstorp) emphasises a decentralised and innovative-oriented approach in contrast to the existing structure. To implement this combined strategy Knudstorp uses a managing at eye level approach, which he defined as being able to talk to people on the factory floor, to the engineers, to marketers being at home with everyone (OConnell, 2009). Knudstorp achieves this through a relaxation of the top-down management style, allowing responsibility and decision making to be pushed as far down the hierarchy as possible (OConnell, 2009), much like McGregors (1960) Theory Y where collaboration within the company relies on leaders recognising the potential of their resources and how to realise that potential. Through the realisation of the Knudstorps leadership style the LEGO Group moved away from a hierarchical organisational structure to a flatter one with: cross-functional teamwork, employee involvement, more open communication lines and styles. With open communication whe re all the members of the company are in contact with each other in some way or another the company is able to have a stronger sense of community. The LEGO Group communicates its attitude to the responsibility of its employees through communication, health safety, people and culture policies and promises. Link between Project and Corporate Strategy  [4]   The LEGO Group uses an innovation matrix a tool developed within the company to help identify, allocate resources and coordinate different innovation activities (projects) for developing new products. The strategic coordination of innovation activities is led by a cross-cultural team: the Executive Innovation Governance Group (EIGG), they determine LEGOs innovation goals and strategy; define the new product portfolio; coordinate innovation activities ensuring they are mutually reinforcing; delegate authority; allocate resources; and evaluate results to ensure that all innovation activities support the corporate strategy. Using the innovation matrix allows LEGOs management to understand what; resources to allocate, risks to monitor; and selecting who is responsible for reviewing the innovation activities. The company divides its innovation activities into eight distinct types, and distributes the responsibility for them across four different areas of the company: functional groups; concept lab; product and marketing development; community, education, and direct. Overseen by the EIGG, the four areas work to achieve innovation activities (projects) that mutually reinforce each other while providing different degrees of innovativeness back to the company. Relationship with Stakeholders/Shareholders The LEGO Group emphasises a strong focus on ensuring the balance of the value created for the owners in comparison to the value creation for the remaining stakeholders such as: consumers, employees, customers and other partners. The company believes that creating value for the companys stakeholders will result in long term value creation for the owners. It is important for us to engage in respectful stakeholder dialogue by being transparent and ensuring an open and honest dialogue. It is fundamental to us that the relationship between our company and our host communities are based on trust, mutual respect, and a cooperative spirit. (Jensen, 2012). Shareholder Relationship The CEO is the head of the company, but it is a family-owned company controlled by Kjeld Kirk Kristiansen, the majority shareholder of KIRKBI: the investment company with 75% control of the LEGO Group (The LEGO Group, 2012). The LEGO Group actively engages customers to participate in the design and creation of new products and ideas. Although they lose come control over its system, the company gains knowledge from its most valued consumers. Suggested Governance and Leadership In 2009, Knudstorp stated that the company was pursuing organic growth, and needed to change leadership style again to continue building sales volume. Knudstorp asserted that the change is necessary as the company had become risk averse while focusing on survival, and that they needed to become opportunity driven, which requires taking greater risks (OConnell, 2009). In 2011, Hasbro, one of the companys major competitors planned to launch a new product called the Kre-O, which was designed to be compatible with LEGO bricks (Anderson, 2011). This poses a significant threat to the company due to the size and brad power of Hasbro. To mitigate threats such as competition from new/existing sources, it is important for the LEGO Group to change its governance structure to help the company formulate a corporate strategy that allows the company to maintain market dominance and financial stability/success in the future. Governance Currently the LEGO Group has combined the behaviour and outcome oriented approach in the overall governance of the company: behaviour oriented organisations are indifferent to whether projects are managed in-house or externally so long as the process conforms with the companys policies; outcome oriented organisations manage projects internally through employees with a wider skillset (Mà ¼ller, 2009). The LEGO Group works with both internal and external designers as well as customers in product development (behaviour orientation) while having a board member or the EIGG overseeing the project management, and ensuring it fits in with the corporate strategy (outcome orientation). According to Mà ¼ller (2009) there are four governance paradigms, the: flexible economist, versatile artist, conformist and agile pragmatist. The LEGO Group currently falls under the versatile artist paradigm where the company prioritises the diverse user needs using project management methods to realise the requirements of a variety of stakeholders, as well as promoting high productivity. However, the company needs to migrate to a more behaviour oriented agile pragmatist paradigm, which also accounts for the needs of the diverse stakeholders, but allows for products to develop from core functionality; to include additional features; to enhance the flexibility and user-friendliness, especially when dealing with the gaming and computer entertainment products which include successful franchises such as LEGO Star Warsà ¢Ã¢â‚¬Å¾Ã‚ ¢, LEGO Batmanà ¢Ã¢â‚¬Å¾Ã‚ ¢ and LEGO Harry Potterà ¢Ã¢â‚¬Å¾Ã‚ ¢ (The LEGO Group, 2012). One of those companies was US-based eBay Inc. , who entered China by acquiring stake in Shanghai's EachNet. com for $30 million. Ma then launched Taobao to rival eBay in the Business to Consumer (B2C) and Consumer to Consumer (C2C) market.Again, Taobao employed the free concept strategy to attempt to build a consumer base by offering free listings on their website. Alibaba also developed a promotional str ategy for Taobao in which they advertised through online ads and billboards. Taobao also had a unique feature where users can e-mail and chat with each other onsite unlike their eBay counterparts who concealed sellers identity and only offered communications through offline messaging. Taobao also addressed the trust factor during online transactions between buyers and sellers by developing AliPay, similar to Paypal.The first mistake that eBay Inc. made was that they based their business strategy on the US business model. What they failed to realize is that the Taobao product was designed for the local consumer while eBay's product was more product based, meaning they are more concerned with how to get more consumers to use their product rather than does this product fit the consumers wants and needs. eBay declined to drop their auction fees and failed to improve consumer interaction on their website to compete with Taobao. eBay should have focused more on the local strategies that other local business use.They could have done this if they were more consumer driven and aligned with the local environment. eBay should have went through the process of environmental scanning. Nitrogen in Tires Question: What makes nitrogen in tires better than air? I see a lot of tires with the green cap indicating they are filled with nitrogen. Is there any advantage to putting nitrogen in my automobile tires instead of compressed air? How does it work? Answer: There are multiple reasons why nitrogen is preferable to air in automobile tires: better pressure retention leading to increased fuel economy and improved tire lifespancooler running temperatures accompanied by less pressure fluctuation with temperature changeless tendency toward wheel rot To understand why, its helpful to review the composition of air. Air is mostly nitrogen (78%), with 21% oxygen, and smaller amounts of carbon dioxide, water vapor, and other gases. The oxygen and water vapor are the molecules that matter. Although you might think oxygen would be a larger molecule than nitrogen because it has a higher mass on the periodic table, elements further along an element period actually have a small atomic radius because of the nature of the electron shell. An oxygen molecule, O2, is smaller than a nitrogen molecule, N2, making it easier for oxygen to migrate through the wall of tires. Tires filled with air deflate more quickly than those filled with pure nitrogen. Is it enough to matter? A 2007 Consumer Reports study compared air-inflated tires and nitrogen-inflated tires to see which lost pressure more quickly and whether the difference was significant. The study compared 31 different automobile models with tires inflated to 30 psi. They followed the tire pressure for a year and found air-filled tires lost an average of 3.5 psi, while nitrogen-filled tires lost an average of 2.2 psi. In other words, air-filled tires leak 1.59 times more quickly than nitrogen-filled tires. The leakage rate varied widely between different brands of tires, so if a manufacturer recommends filling a tire with nitrogen, its best to heed the advice. For example, the BF Goodrich tire in the test lost 7 psi. Tire age also mattered. Presumably, older tires accumulate tiny fractures which make them more leaky with time and wear. Water is another molecule of interest. If you only ever fill up your tires with dry air, the effects of water arent a problem, but not all compressors remove water vapor. Water in tires should not lead to tire rot in modern tires because they are coated with aluminum so they will form aluminum oxide when exposed to water. The oxide layer protects the aluminum from further attack in much the same way chrome protects steel. However, if you are using tires that do not have the coating, water can attack the tire polymer and degrade it. The more common problem (which I have noted in my Corvette, when I have used air rather than nitrogen) is that water vapor leads to pressure fluctuations with temperature. If there is water in your compressed air, it enters the tires. As the tires heat up, the water vaporizes and expands, increasing tire pressure much more significantly than what you see from the expansion of nitrogen and oxygen. As the tire cools, pressure drops appreciably. The changes reduce tire life expectancy and affect fuel economy. Again, the magnitude of the effect likely is influenced by brand of tire, age of tire, and how much water you have in your air. The Bottom Line The important thing is to make sure your tires are kept inflated at the proper pressure. This is much more important than whether the tires are inflated with nitrogen or with air. However, if your tires are expensive or you drive under extreme conditions (i.e., at high speeds or with extreme temperature changes over the course of a trip), its worth it to use nitrogen. If you have low pressure but normally fill with nitrogen, its better to add compressed air than wait until you can get nitrogen, but you may see a difference in the behavior of your tire pressure. If there is water in with the air, any problems will likely be lasting, since theres nowhere for the water to go. Air is fine for most tires and preferable for a vehicle youll take to remote locations, since compressed air is much more readily available than nitrogen.

Diamond is both a physiologist and a linguist who spends a good deal of his time living with hunter gathers in Papua New Guinea. Diamond's hypothesis is that geography gave certain groups big initial advantages. Specifically, some places are more conducive to domestication of plants and animals. Most people think that domestication is just a matter of capturing animals and breeding them in captivity. This is a misconception. Domesticated species of plants and animals have undergone major genetic changes through years of selective breeding. Compared to their wild ancestors, the major cereal crops are more nutritious, quicker to germinate, and easier to sow and harvest. Domestic animals are more docile, easier to train, and generally more suited to life in captivity. Diamond's key point is that not every wild species is equally susceptible to domestication and that domesticable species are not evenly distributed across the globe. Fast-food restaurants have become archetypal in the past 30 years, and nearly all of Americans takes advantage of the tasty meals, quick service, and cheap prices. Convenient as they seem, these meals contain almost no nutrients. They are comprised mostly of saturated fats and highly refined carbohydrates and are loaded with sodium and sugar. Almost every fast food restaurant we all love to go to, doesn’t give us many option. When it comes to picking a healthy choice, instead of choosing between low fat or wheat we have the option of choosing how many patties, bacon or no bacon, cheese in the crust, how big of a soda, crispy or extra crispy. These are not very good alternatives. Another problem is when we see those large 64 ounce sodas at 7/11 that are way more for one person. Young kids buy them because they look cool, and adults, because they think it’s a good deal for a lot of soda. Why is that that in this country we have opportunities to many things we want, but wh en it comes to eating it seems like some of us always go the easy processed way. Why are there no alternatives to what we choose to eat or drink, especially in the fast food industry? The United States is home to the some of the most obese people in the world. According to the CDC (Center for Disease Control and Prevention), obesity in adults has increased by 60% within the past twenty years and obesity in children has tripled in the past thirty years (Brownell). A staggering 33% of American adults are obese and obesity-related deaths have climbed to more than 300,000 a year, second only to tobacco-related deaths (Finkelstein). It is strange to see that America’s obesity numbers just keep getting higher and higher with really little signs of improvement. The people don’t have the problem it’s the Unites States in general that has the problem. According to Dr. Kelly Brownell, PhD, an expert on American diet and health, a study was conducted with the Pima Indians who live both in Mexico and Arizona. It was found that those Pima Indians who live in Arizona have much higher rates of obesity than their counterparts in Mexico, even though both group s of people have the same genetic and ethnic background. This is also true for many migrants of the US who have a much higher obesity rate than their relatives back home (Puhl).

Bless Me Ultima Theme Analysis Essay

Chinua Achebe and Rudolfo Anaya write stories about two people that must over come struggles and difficulties in life. The characters in both stories must overcome internal and external conflict. A theme expressed in both stories is that everyone has conflicted and struggles in their life but they must overcome and make the best of the situation. This theme is expressed through character thoughts, symbolism and character experiences. In Anaya’s story, Bless Me Ultima, the main character, Antonio must over come many different obstacles, in one summer. Throughout Antonio’s summer he experiences death everywhere, he experiences the death of a stranger, family friend, and 2 close friends, but some how through it all he stays strong. He witnesses the death of a dear friend, â€Å" the lonely river was a sad place to be when one is a small boy who has just seen a friend die† (Anaya, 231). Antonio wintness the death of someone from town, Lupito, although he did not really know the man, witnessing the death of anyone can be saddening, â€Å" I saw Lupito lifted off his feet and hurled backwards by the bullets. (Anaya 20) Not only did Antonio have to say goodbye to the people who died, shortly after his brothers returned from war, they were gone again, â€Å"I wondered if I would ever really know my brothers, or would the remain but phantoms of my dream. † ( Anya, 178) Although Antonio was not a smiling laughing child through the course of the story, he did remain positive and continued moving forward. In Achebe’s short story Civil Peace, the main character Jonathan Iwegbu and his family go through a devastating 3 year war, however he continues to stay strong, this shows through comparisons and symbolism. Instead of the character being depressed and whoa it is me, he is thankful and feels he is blessed, â€Å"He had come of the war with five inestimable blessings- his head, his wife Maria’s head, and the head of the three of their four children. † (Achebe, 358) Things we take forgranted in America Jonathan considered them miracles. â€Å"As a bonus he also has his old bicycle- a miracle too†¦Ã¢â‚¬  (Achebe, 359) Another example, â€Å"the newest miracle was his little house in Ogui Overside†¦..  Of course the doors and windows were missing and five sheets of the roof† (Achebe 359). Rusted bike, and damaged house, these our things many people would be disappointed to have, Jonathan is just grateful to have anything, with everything he has been through, he finds the better side of the situation. The thoughts and words of both characters is clear evidence of perseverance and determination to continue moving forward. â€Å" Let it go where everything el se has gone. Nothing puzzles God† (Achebe, 364). Jonathan says this after the robbers come to his house, he is saying that let them take the money, more was taken in the war, and that God knows what he is doing. Even after all the money he has worked hard for is taken Jonathan still does not get down on himself, like Antonio. â€Å"The rest of the summer was good for me, good in a sense that is was filled with its richness and I made strength from everything that had happened to me, so that in the end even the final tragedy could not defeat me† (Anaya, 237). This though Antonio had sums up the theme of both stories all in one. Both characters will take what the world throws at them and use it to make them stronger, and they will continue to live. These stories were both straightforward and easy to keep up with, but they had deeper meanings within the story. There wasn’t only the one theme I have described for you, but many other ones. However the theme that popped out at me, was basically what doesn’t kill us makes us stronger. Which is No matter what people go through they must find the strength within to persevere and continue living their life.

There is much benefit and blessing in casting according to the Word of God. Let’s consider some areas where the Bible teaches the benefits of the art of casting. CASTING AWAY STONES is sometimes necessary. Solomon tells us that there is a time for everything. â€Å"A time to cast away stones and a time to gather stones . . . a time to tear down and a time to rebuild† (Ecclesiastes 3:1-8). Perhaps your seasonal time is to cast away stones and rebuild. It could be your business, your marriage, your ministry, or your life. It could mean casting away the stones in your heart. But when you rebuild, make sure you start by taking â€Å"the stone that the builders rejected† – Jesus the Chief Cornerstone. He alone can give you the lasting stability that you need. (Matthew 21:41; I Peter 2:4-7; Isaiah 57:13-14) FORCASTING the weather has become an acceptable science. Jesus rebuked those who forecast the weather by the signs of the sky, but would not perceive and believe the signs of His return to this earth. The prophecies in the Word of God forecast the coming of Christ for His Church. (Matthew 16:1-4; 24; I Thessalonians 5:1-9) Study the forecast. CASTING YOUR CARES AND BURDENS ON THE LORD is the way of peace. â€Å"Casting your care on Him for He cares for you† (I Peter 5:7). You don’t need to carry your heavy burdens. Cast them on the Lord. Why? He cares about you and He is strong enough to carry them. (Psalm 55:22) Perhaps you need to do some casting right now. Go ahead. CAST NOT AWAY YOUR CONFIDENCE. The Israelites of old missed out on the promised land because they doubted God’s ability and intention to bring them into the land. Put your confidence in the Lord. He is able. â€Å"Therefore do not cast away your confidence which has great recompense of reward† (Hebrews 10:35-38 KJV). It is not a time to draw back – but to draw near. CASTING FOR A THEATRICAL PRODUCTION IS DECIDED BY TALENT AND BEAUTY. But Jesus chose the cast of His disciples, mostly from simple, unlearned men. One of my most memorable Easters was while pastoring in South Dakota. That Easter my wife directed a production of â€Å"The Last Supper†. The cast was not made up of professional actors, but rough rugged men. Vern was a meat-cutter who was battling cancer. Being in the production had special meaning to him as a new believer. When the 12 disciples were told by Jesus that one of them would betray Him, they, one by one asked, â€Å"Master is it I?† The narrative of the play was very moving. You could feel the very presence of God. Shortly after the production, Vern went home to be with the Lord. Like the 12 disciples, these men in the cast were unlikely to be chosen by a professional director. But the followers of Christ’s cast are not chosen by talent or appearance, but by the grace and mercy of God.  "For by grace are you saved by faith and that not of yourselves, it is the gift of God, not of works, lest any man should boast† (Ephesians 2:8-9 KJV). â€Å"CAST YOUR BREAD UPON THE WATERS and after many days it shall return† (Ecclesiastes 11:1). Jesus amplified Solomon’s advice. â€Å"Give and it shall be given to you, pressed down shaken together and running over† (Luke 6:38). Do you want to be blessed? Cast your bread, your substance on the waters. CASTING YOUR SINS behind His back is God’s promise for those who repent and confess them. (Isaiah 38:17) â€Å"If we confess our sins, He is faithful and just to forgive our sins and to cleanse us from all unrighteousness† (I John 1:9-10). He will cast our sins as far as the east is from the west. (Psalm 103:12) CASTING OUR CROWNS before the One who died for us and arose victorious will be a privileged act of worship in heaven. (Revelation 4:9-10) God makes all of those who receive Christ kings and priests. We will cast those crowns before the Lamb of God who made us worthy by His blood. (I Peter 2:9; Revelation 1:6; 5:10) Don’t wait until heaven – cast your crown before Him now in praise, thanksgiving, and worship. Top 15 Mistakes That Will Get You Fired It’s hard enough to get a job- let alone your dream job. Alas, it can be very easy to lose that job. Here are 15 mistakes that will get you fired from your job. Get your dream job- and keep it. 1. Ignoring Zero Tolerance RulesWhatever the specifics, every company usually has a couple of rules that shall not be broken- and if you break them, you’re out. No second chances. Whether it’s dating subordinates, dating coworkers at all, lateness, or something else entirely, you should find this out within your first week and be very mindful never to break it. Don’t ever assume the unbendable rules will make an exception for you!2. Substance AbuseIf you’re working for a company that drug tests, you should take this seriously. It’s not enough to bring in clean pee for the interview process. They will test you again. Stop using whatever it is you’re using and focus on your career. You will get caught otherwise. And fired.3. Too Much BoozeIf you c an’t drink it responsibly, don’t drink. Being sloppy or not holding your liquor at a work event once is bad enough. Doing this multiple times is absolutely cause for firing- and good luck getting a reference. And don’t ever come to work or try to do your work intoxicated.4. Dating Co-WorkersFirst step is, see #1, to check the zero tolerance policies for any mention of inter-office dating. Second is to try and talk yourself out of it. Third is never to actively pursue a relationship with someone you work with. There are so many ways your overtures could be read as harassment†¦and get you fired.There are plenty of fish in the sea. Go find one that doesn’t work at your company.5. Too Many JokesJokes are great ice breakers. They’re funny. They score you points at parties. But they don’t belong at work. Most of the good ones have an off-color or racy element- which has no place on the job. So many others can have bigoted overtones and could deeply offend people you respect (and get you fired).And don’t make comments you think are funny that might be misconstrued as sexual harassment either; even if the person you said it to understands the context and isn’t offended, someone else might overhear and turn you in.6. Abusing Expense AccountsPadding your expense account is basically stealing from your company. The more blatant the theft, the more likely you’ll get caught.If you really need to make more, earn it. Ask for a raise. Don’t throw in a bunch of bogus expenses hoping for a payout and that no one will notice. Someone always will. And you’ll get fired.7. Raging OutWe all have bad days or weeks at work and get angry. Do not vent this in any public forums- least of all social media. If you leave work steaming from the ears, turn off your Facebook and your Twitter. Call your significant other or your mom- or tell your roommate you need to go to happy hour and rant a while. Just donâ₠¬â„¢t say anything publicly, or somewhere it could be overheard. The last thing you want is for your negative comments to get back to your boss.8.  Office Hanky PankyYou shouldn’t have to be told that it is pretty much a hard and fast rule that you should never get busy  at the office- or anywhere on company grounds. But people do. And they get caught, and fired. Don’t let this happen to you. Get a room.9. Pulling PranksThese are hilarious, some even bordering on legendary. But most are far too risky or silly for a workplace. Watch in awe as others pull off epic pranks (some will lose their jobs); don’t try anything yourself.10. Not Understanding You’re ReplaceableAs in, never assume that you are. It’s a tough market and no matter how great you are, there’s probably another you out there, standing outside the hiring manager’s office with a hopeful resume. Act as though you could be replaced any day and avoid doing the things that will give your boss cause to have to replace you.11. LyingYou should adopt a zero tolerance policy about lying. Just don’t do it. And in particular don’t do it to get time off. Don’t develop wacky illnesses or kill off fake elderly relatives. You’ll probably get caught- and fired.12. Ignoring Your ManagerAlways  stay in tune with your boss’s concept of your job performance- not your own. Always check in to take his or her  temperature to make sure they think you’re pulling your weight. If you have room to improve, do.13. AbuseIt should go without saying, but: don’t be abusive. And don’t sit idly by and watch others be abused. There’s no place for this in everyday  life or in the workplace.14. Speaking for Your CompanyUnless specifically told to be a mouthpiece or to spread some news, keep your mouth shut in public about your company. The minute you get on social media and purport to speak for your company- particul arly about something potentially controversial- is the minute you’re in shaky territory. People like you get fired all the time for inappropriate posts or for spreading misinformation.15. Not Trusting Your GutIf you have a flash of insight that says: â€Å"maybe I shouldn’t do this,† then you should honor it. Every time. When something is borderline, and not so blatantly obvious as a no-no, check in with yourself. If you have even the slightest hesitation, chances are it’s not a good idea. Play it safe and keep your job.
